Hidden gems abound during a Midwest summer.

June 27, 2024 –  As a Chicagoan and born Midwesterner, I know that summers are one of the best seasons across the region. And while you may not think of Indiana – where I grew up – as a place that would have a series of great beaches, I have news for you. Growing up near Lake Michigan, my summers were spent at Indiana Dunes National Park, which you’ll read more about below.


You may be dreaming of the sun-soaked shores of Florida or the tropical beaches of Hawaii, but the Midwest boasts some of the most picturesque and serene beach destinations in the United States. From the Great Lakes to charming inland lakes, there are a variety of spots perfect for a beach getaway. Here’s a guide to some of the best beach destinations in the Midwest:


Chicago, Illinois

Known for its stunning skyline and vibrant city life, Chicago also boasts a surprising number of beautiful beaches along the shores of Lake Michigan, making it a unique urban beach destination.
