Exploring Spain, Portugal, France and England

September 5, 2024 – I recently returned from an amazing cruise around the Iberian Peninsula, up the coast of France and ending in England. After spending a few days in Barcelona ahead of the cruise, I sailed to Málaga, Cadiz, Lisbon, Bilbao, Bordeaux and ended in Portsmouth, followed by a few days in London to wrap up the trip.

Outside of London, these were all new destinations for me and visiting them was the thrill of a lifetime. In future blog posts, I’ll dive deeper into these destinations, but first, here’s a sample of what to know about each city and why you should visit them.

Barcelona

Barcelona effortlessly blends historic charm with modern flair. Known for its stunning architecture, including Antoni Gaudí's iconic Sagrada Família and Park Güell, Barcelona offers a feast for the eyes. Stroll along the bustling Las Ramblas, relax on beautiful Mediterranean beaches, or explore the Gothic Quarter’s narrow, winding streets. With a rich cultural scene, world-class dining, and a lively atmosphere, Barcelona is sure to capture your heart.

Málaga

Málaga, nestled on Spain's Costa del Sol, is a city where history meets the Mediterranean's laid-back charm. Known as the birthplace of Picasso, Málaga boasts a thriving arts scene, along with landmarks like the Alcazaba fortress and the Roman Theatre. Its golden beaches, vibrant nightlife, and excellent tapas bars make it a delightful coastal escape, while the city's museums and historic architecture reflect its rich cultural heritage. Whether you're seeking sun, history, or modern urban pleasures, Málaga has it all.

Cadiz

Cádiz, one of the oldest cities in Europe, is a coastal gem on Spain's southern shores. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, this ancient port city is rich in history, with narrow cobblestone streets, charming plazas, and well-preserved landmarks like the Cádiz Cathedral and Torre Tavira. Known for its vibrant festivals, including the famous Carnaval, Cádiz also offers beautiful beaches and a laid-back atmosphere. It's a perfect destination for those seeking a mix of history, culture, and seaside relaxation.

Lisbon

Lisbon, the sun-kissed capital of Portugal, dazzles with its unique blend of old-world charm and contemporary energy. Perched on seven hills overlooking the Tagus River, Lisbon's vibrant neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto are filled with narrow streets, colorful tiled buildings, and stunning viewpoints. Rich in history, it boasts iconic landmarks such as the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery, while its culinary scene, buzzing nightlife, and soulful Fado music create a captivating atmosphere. Lisbon’s warm, welcoming vibe makes it a must-visit European destination.

Bilbao

Bilbao, the heart of Spain's Basque Country, is a dynamic city known for its impressive blend of modernity and tradition. Once an industrial hub, Bilbao has transformed into a cultural hotspot, highlighted by the iconic Guggenheim Museum with its striking architecture. The city's food scene is famous for its pintxos (Basque tapas), while its atmospheric old town, Casco Viejo, offers narrow streets and charming plazas. With a backdrop of rolling green hills and a strong cultural identity, Bilbao is an exciting mix of artistic innovation and Basque heritage.

Bordeaux

Bordeaux, nestled in southwestern France, is synonymous with world-class wine and elegant charm. Known as the wine capital of the world, the city is surrounded by renowned vineyards, while its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts grand neoclassical architecture and bustling squares. The Garonne River adds to Bordeaux's picturesque scenery, and its vibrant food scene offers an abundance of local delicacies. With its mix of sophisticated urban life, rich history, and vinicultural heritage, Bordeaux is a delight for both wine lovers and culture seekers.

London

London is a bustling global metropolis where history and modernity blend seamlessly. Iconic landmarks like Big Ben, the Tower of London, and Buckingham Palace sit alongside cutting-edge architecture and vibrant cultural hubs. From world-class museums and theaters in the West End to sprawling parks like Hyde Park and charming neighborhoods such as Notting Hill, London offers endless exploration. Its rich diversity is reflected in its dynamic food scene and eclectic mix of traditions, making London a captivating destination for travelers from all walks of life.
