Falling in Love with Spain's Sunshine Coast.
October 10, 2024 – Thinking about a trip to the sunny shores of Spain's Costa del Sol? You absolutely should be! This place is bursting with amazing beaches, delicious food, and enough activities to keep you busy for weeks.
On the Iberian cruise I took in August, I had the time of my life. I had the opportunity to explore the center of beautiful Málaga and kayaked in scenic Cádiz.
To help you plan your getaway, I've whipped up a quick guide with some insider tips and must-do activities.
First things first, where to stay?
Cádiz: Like stepping into a vibrant postcard, where ancient history meets sun-drenched beaches and the air buzzes with the infectious rhythm of flamenco.
Málaga: The capital of the region, buzzing with history, culture, and a killer nightlife. Check out the Alcazaba, a Moorish fortress with stunning views.
Marbella: Glamorous and glitzy, perfect for those who love a bit of luxury. Stroll down the Golden Mile, lined with designer shops and fancy restaurants.
Nerja: A charming town with beautiful beaches and the famous Nerja Caves, home to prehistoric paintings.
Fuengirola: More laid-back with a long stretch of sandy beach, ideal for families.
Now for the fun part, what to do?
Beach bum it: With over 300 days of sunshine a year, soaking up the rays is a must. Playa de Burriana in Nerja and Playa de la Malagueta in Málaga are great choices.
Hike El Caminito del Rey: Not for the faint of heart! This walkway clings to the side of a gorge and offers incredible views (and maybe a bit of an adrenaline rush!).
Explore the white villages: Andalusia is famous for its "pueblos blancos" like Mijas and Frigiliana. Get lost in the maze of narrow streets and admire the whitewashed houses.
Tapas time! No trip to Spain is complete without indulging in tapas. Head to a local bar and sample all the delicious small plates. Don't miss out on espetos (grilled sardines) if you're near the coast.
Catch a flamenco show: Experience the passion and energy of flamenco in a traditional tablao.
Day trip to Ronda: This dramatic city is built on a cliff and boasts a stunning bridge and bullring.
Travel Tips to make your trip smoother than a glass of Rioja:
Best time to visit: Spring or fall for pleasant weather and fewer crowds. Summer can get scorching!
Getting around: Renting a car gives you freedom, but public transport is efficient and affordable.
Learn some basic Spanish: Even a few phrases will go a long way with the locals.
Pack for the beach: Swimsuit, sunscreen, hat, the works!
Embrace the siesta: Many shops close in the afternoon, so plan your activities accordingly.
Most importantly, relax and enjoy the Spanish vibes!
Have an amazing time in Costa del Sol!
